UK Government and Parliament

AI Growth Lab
Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner published a response to DSIT’s proposed AI Growth Lab call for evidence. It is a useful signal of what safeguards, monitoring, and accountability could be treated as credible if the UK develops a more structured regulatory modification route for AI innovation. 

Parliamentary scrutiny
The House of Lords held a debate on AI systems risks on 8 January 2026, reinforcing political attention on safety and oversight. In parallel, the Lords Communications and Digital Committee has an oral evidence session scheduled on AI and copyright.

Regulators and enforcement

Ofcom
Ofcom confirmed that the Online Safety Act super complaints regime commenced on 1 January 2026, and published an operational page with draft guidance and an expression of interest route. This adds a formal mechanism for eligible expert bodies to push systemic evidence to Ofcom, which can intersect with AI driven content systems, recommender systems, and automated moderation governance. 

Information Commissioner’s Office
The ICO issued a statement on 7 January 2026 indicating it had contacted X and xAI, and that it would assess whether further action may be required after reviewing their response. For AI governance, the practical signal is that high profile generative AI deployments can trigger rapid regulator engagement focused on lawful processing and rights protection.

Financial Conduct Authority
The FCA reiterated that applications for the second cohort of AI Live Testing will open in January 2026, with testing starting in April, and it continues to run the AI Input Zone with a response deadline of 30 January 2026. This is a sector specific governance channel that can influence what “safe and responsible” deployment looks like in practice, particularly around monitoring, evaluation, and risk management. 

Public sector

Cabinet Office and DSIT delivery signals
The refreshed Government Cyber Action Plan sets out delivery oriented actions that cut across government and suppliers, including expectations that can shape procurement requirements for digital services that rely on AI systems. The governance implication is indirect but material, because AI adoption in public services depends on secure and resilient infrastructure and supply chains.

Government Cyber Action Plan update
The updated plan was positioned as a package to drive practical improvements in cyber resilience. For AI governance, the key relevance is that model deployment and AI enabled service delivery expand attack surfaces, so resilience work becomes a core dependency for trustworthy AI in critical and high impact settings.

The government’s Bill collection page continues to consolidate the official documents and status references for the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, including links to the full Bill on the Parliament site. This remains the anchor for checking official materials as the legislative process continues.
