ISO/IEC 42001:2023 establishes the first certifiable management-system standard for artificial intelligence (AI). It defines requirements for organisations to establish, implement, maintain and continually improve an AI management system (AIMS) ensuring accountable, transparent and risk-aware governance of AI activities. It adopts ISO’s Plan–Do–Check–Act framework and is designed to integrate with existing management systems such as ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO/IEC 27001 (information security). The Scope clause specifies that the standard “provides requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an AI management system within the context of an organization”. Published in December 2023 by ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42, it is intended for all organisations that design, provide or use AI systems and aims to harmonise AI governance and assurance practices globally.
