The European Ethical Charter on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Judicial Systems and Their Environment was adopted to address the growing integration of AI technologies in justice and to ensure that innovation respects fundamental rights and judicial principles. It establishes five core principles — respect for fundamental rights, non-discrimination, quality and security, transparency and impartiality, and “under user control” — guiding AI design, deployment, and oversight in judicial contexts. As the first international ethical framework for AI in justice, it shaped subsequent Council of Europe and EU initiatives on trustworthy AI and continues to influence AI governance models balancing efficiency with the protection of human rights.
